Crisis in the Causus
At 0720 this morning, a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship headed to Abkhazia was seized and detained by the Georgian Coast Guard. The name of this ship is Joya del Oeste and belongs to the Venezuelan state-owned Compania Anonima Venezolana de Navegacion (CAVN). The cargo ship was carrying seeds, grains and fertilizer. However, the Georgian government has claimed that illegal weapons headed for the Abkhaz region were found aboard the ship. As one of the few countries that recognize the sovereignty of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the Venezuelan Government finds this claim absolutely absurd and illegal and part of the West’s imperialist and expansionist agenda in the region.
